Is it time to get an iPhone?
A bit of History
The iPhone has gone down in the history of mobile phones as the most anticipated new product ever from any maker. It helped that the maker was Apple, a niche computer maker and the first of its kind to enter the mobile phone market in 2007.
So did the iPhone live up to the hype when it started out?
Yes and No. For sure, the first generation iPhone elicited a lot of oohs and aahs among mobile gadget users for its amazing and revolutionary touch screen interface. Never mind the hefty price tag and the fact that the user gets tied exclusively to a phone company. The iPhone was a must have especially among the young and hip crowd.
But among industry critics and seasoned mobile phone users, the common assessment was and has been: 'If you need a mobile phone with the right features, go elsewhere.'
It was beautiful alright. Heavy and rock solid in your hands. The interface was indeed a first and ahead of its time. Many brands would follow suit and there were quite a few posing as 'iPhone killers' months before the announced release. And soon, just about every other high end mobile phone started to look like one. Touch screens suddenly became the norm.
But as a mobile phone, even mid-priced Nokias and Sony Ericssons had the edge in virtually all aspect of what the market has known to be really useful features for a high end mobile phone.. The net is full of articles appraising these features but suffice it to say that the iPhone was at once a disappointment as a phone but a rewarding gadget to play and be seen with. It was a status symbol for a long while.
And now'
Now, the most vocal of critics can be silenced. Apple first came out addressing an outcry they could not snob ' 3G features and price. Finally, the iPhone was now in league with mobile phones of its class and temperament. Apple even dressed up landmark iPod to look and feel like the iPhone and promptly captured large chunks of the mp3 market upgrading their gadgets.
Now we have the iPhone 3Gs ' Apple's answer to lay all criticisms to rest. Beefed with a powerful video engine, the 3rd generation iPhone is the most powerful, halving the speed of access and processing of the applications it is known for. Armed with MMS capability and an imaging prowess at par wit the best in the industry, it may indeed be a good time to get one.
